When crisp autumn air rolls across the southern peninsula and you crave a quiet sanctuary away from city noise, one destination stands above the rest: Chukryeongsan Cypress Forest (Jangseong Healing Forest) in South Jeolla Province. Spanning over 1,150 hectares, it is Korea's largest artificial evergreen forest and boasts the highest phytoncide emissions in the country.
Planted over two decades after the Korean War by visionary forester Lim Jong-guk, tens of thousands of 40-to-60-year-old hinoki cypress and Japanese cedar trees now tower into the sky. Here is my first-person account of walking the soft earth paths and barrier-free wooden decks while breathing in the crisp cedar-scented air.

Approaching the Foothills of Mount Chukryeongsan Along Quiet Rural Roads
Leaving downtown Jangseong and winding toward the foothills of Mount Chukryeongsan, wide blue skies and rolling countryside fields opened up outside the car window. Free from urban traffic, wildflowers and quiet farmlands set a peaceful rhythm before we even stepped onto the trail.
Traditional Tiled Roofs Nestled in a Tranquil Mountain Village
Near the trailhead village, low-slung tiled roofs, stone walls, and rustic wooden fences welcomed us beneath the deep green ridge of the mountain. Only the sound of wind rustling through the branches and birdsong filled the valley, naturally slowing our pace.
Towering Hinoki Cypress Groves Filling the Sky with Phytoncides
Stepping onto the main healing trail, tens of thousands of hinoki cypress trunks rose straight toward the clouds on both sides. Even at midday, the dense evergreen canopy cast a cool emerald shade across the forest floor.
Every deep breath carried the crisp, resinous scent of phytoncides deep into the lungs, washing away weeks of accumulated fatigue.
Barrier-Free Wooden Deck Trails Built for Effortless Forest Bathing
One of the finest features of Chukryeongsan is its long, gently graded wooden boardwalk. Built without steps and lined with sturdy railings, the deck trail lets visitors of all ages—including strollers and wheelchairs—enjoy forest bathing safely.
Soft Earth Paths Carpeted with Wild Ferns and Moss
Branching off the boardwalk onto the natural dirt trail reveals a more primal side of the forest. Lush wild ferns and woodland plants carpet both sides of the path, while fallen needles cushion every footstep.
Natural Granite Boulders and Shaded Forest Rest Areas
Along the slope, weathered granite boulders and wooden benches offer cool resting spots under the shade. Sitting back with closed eyes, the entire mountain feels like a natural healing capsule.
Outdoor Wooden Table Dining and Savory Grilled Meat After the Hike
After a refreshing morning hike, we gathered at an outdoor wooden picnic table near the edge of the forest. Dining in the open mountain breeze with fresh greens and side dishes tasted incomparable to any indoor restaurant.
